Joseph J. Richter of Caledonia Twp., formerly of Chesaning, age 92, passed away Tuesday evening, July 16, 2019, at The Meadows of Owosso. He was born in Flint on July 30, 1926, the son of the late Joseph T. and Elizabeth (Bedrava) Richter. Joseph J. has been a resident of Chesaning for 90 years. He was a proud and Honorably Discharged Army WWII Veteran, having achieved the rank of Sergeant. He was united in marriage to Marion J. Vondrasek and she preceded him in death in 1968. He was later united in marriage to Betty Blattel and she preceded him in death on 2001.
Mr. Richter was a longtime member of St. Peter Parish Catholic Church of Chesaning. He was a GM retiree, having worked on the assembly line, and also owned and worked his farm. For eight years, he was part owner of Chesaning Farm and Chemical. Joe was one of the oldest members of the Chesaning Conservation Club and a member of Knights of Columbus, V.F.W., and the American Legion. He was an active sportsman, especially bowling and fishing, and he loved Polka dancing.
Those left to cherish his memory include his five children, Shirley (Jim) McNier of Atlanta, MI, Diane (Sam) Scime of Virginia, JoAnn (Mark) Maisner of Fowlerville, Jeannie (Fred) Honey of Florida, and Joe (Candi) Richter of Ohio; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a great-grandson, Nick.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at St. Peter Parish Catholic Church, 404 S. Wood Street, Chesaning. Fr. William Gruden will be officiating. Military funeral honors will be given at the church after the Mass by Chesaning American Legion Post 212 and US Army. Visitation will be from 2-8 pm Monday at Misiuk Funeral Home of Chesaning and from 9 am Tuesday at the church until time of the Mass. The Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 8 pm Monday at the funeral home.
